ABOUT FREE MANIFESTA
FREE MANIFESTA is an open exhibition of nonmonetary artworks to be held
in Frankfurt am Main, Germany from May 24 - August 25, 2002.
Any artist who wishes may participate with such works as ephemeral installations,
guerilla performances, interactions, dérives, situations, giveaways,
ambulatory declamations, parties, neo-happenings, apartment shows, guided
experiences, screenings, projections, mail art, downloadable music, web-based
work. Artworks will be produced independently and take place in public
spaces throughout the Frankfurt area, including through communications
media like the internet, broadcast airwaves, telephone, and mail.
FREE MANIFESTA is a project of artist Sal Randolph and will be an official
participant in the European biennial Manifesta 4, http://www.manifesta.de.
It is intended as an experiment in creating a social network of artists,
a gift economy which that can act as an alternative to traditional forms
of exhibition in commercial and institutional contexts.
Entries will be accepted until JUNE 30.
GUIDELINES
1. Artistic projects in any medium are welcome, but should be nonmonetary
(meaning no money changes hands, nothing is bought or sold, no admission
is charged.). Works will take place in public and quasi-public spaces
-- for instance, streets, airwaves, and ordinarily private spaces such
as apartments or studios which are opened to the public by appointment.
2. All projects are independently produced by the artists. FREE MANIFESTA
will serve as an information center for the exhibition, and will produce
a website, print and press materials to promote artists projects. (To
get a feeling for this, see the FREE
BIENNIAL website). There will be a FREE MANIFESTA area in the
Manifesta 4 exhibition spaces which will serve as an information booth
to communicate with Manifesta 4 audiences, office headquarters, and social
space for artists.
Please note that the FREE MANIFESTA area will not serve as an exhibition
space for participating artworks. However, if you wish to give away small
artworks (objects, drawings, paintings, CDs, books, stickers, etc.) there
will be a special space for Free Art.
3. If you have questions about how things will work, please consult the
ARTIST'S FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LIST (FAQ).
If you have further questions, please feel free to EMAIL
me or stop by the FREE MANIFESTA headquarters after May 24 (location to
be announced)
4. Please allow at least 2 WEEKS for your information to be processed
and appear on the site and newsletter. This is especially important for
any project with a specific date.
5. If you are planning travel to Frankfurt, there is some basic information
and a map of the Free Manifesta headquarters location at FRANKFURT
INFO.
HOW TO ENTER
1. Please complete the ENTRY FORM
here on the website. This information will be used to create your web
page on the FREE MANIFESTA site.
2. Please also EMAIL
an image as an attachment. Ideally it should be a jpeg or gif formatted
image 288 pixels wide. (If necessary, larger images can be resized, but
smaller images will reproduce poorly.) This image will also be used on
your web page.
3. Please design a single A4 or 8 1/2" x 11" sheet with
information about your project. This sheet will be reproduced by FREE
MANIFESTA and made available to Manifesta 4 audiences and others.
Please note that this page will be xerox reproduced single-sided in black
& white on white A4 paper (A4 paper is 21 x 29.7 cm, slightly narrower
and longer than American standard 8 1/2" by 11").
