FREE MANIFESTA: PROJECTS: YOUR CHEMICAL BODY
YOUR CHEMICAL BODY

JO COOK

In January of this year I was diagnosed with an auto-immune diease and as a result I found myself spending a great deal of time in doctor's waiting rooms reading pamphlets on the side effects of the drugs I was being given. I decided to make a small pamphlet that could be left in doctor's offices alongside the material porvided by the pharmaceutical companies. Your Chemical Body: what is licked, sucked, bitten, & chewed uses alchemical imagery, texts from brochures on drug side effects, and excerpts from my journal. The work is 17" x 5 1/2" with 8 colour images. It folds down to 5 1/2 by 4 1/4.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I was born in Red Wing, Minnesota and moved to Canada in 1969. For the last 12 years I've lived on Mayne Island, B.C. - a small island off the west coast of Canada. Being semi-isloated, I've found that one of the projects that keeps me connected to other artists is making and distributing my independantly produced books, pamphlets, & manifestos. Several of these books have been chosen to tour in 2001 and 2002 with the Mobilivre/Bookmobile project - a North American travelling book arts exhibition. My work can also be seen on http://www.ikatun.com/digitalpocketgallery and at http://www.helsinki.fi/~jjmvanha
