HAN GENE PAIK & DIRK
J. PLATZEK
This project presents an alternative way of using wireless
technology to express individual opinions toward the public. Using cell
phones and other handheld devices that are meant to enhance "private"
communication, participants instead publicize their opinions by casting
text messages onto censor-free display devices installed in "public"
places. It can be even foreseen that a conversion of "private-to-private"
into "private-to-public" communication and its unexpected exposure
in the public arena, may even enable malicious and destructive postings
of vandalism, 'noises', that somehow needs to be justified in the expanding
public arena of the electronic age.
As controversial as it might turn out, this happening will provide a unique
chance to see how the authorities will react to the situation and how
differently they would react from a similar situation in the virtual public
domain.
HOW TO LOCATE
This work consists of multiple display devices installed in public space,
indoor and/or outdoor. To access and experience the work, people use their
Internet-enabled handheld devices such as cellphone, PDA or PC, and post
whatever messages they feel like to the display devices. Due to the wireless
nature of the interactivity, this can be done virtually from anywhere
and at anytime, even from another country. Then the messages are drawn
on the screen like electronic graffiti. (The instruction are included
in the explanatory sheet.)
